All Faiths and None

In 2014, we launched a website called All Faiths and None. The aim was simple but ambitious: to encourage greater understanding between faiths by exploring the similarities in their origin stories, foundational myths and relationships with God.

We looked at stories such as Adam and Eve, God’s covenants with the Jewish people, the Angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Jesus to Mary, and Gabriel’s revelation of the Qur’an to Muhammad.

Ultimately, the project proved too vast and too complicated. Religion inspires profound feeling, and many of its fundamental claims cannot be resolved through facts or discussion. We cannot establish, one way or another, whether Gabriel revealed God’s truth about Jesus to Mary or, centuries later, revealed God’s final testament to Muhammad. These are matters of faith.
So our hope of finding peace through greater religious understanding came to an end.

But one principle remained.

The vast majority of us will defend anyone’s right to believe whatever their conscience tells them. What we do not have to accept is the idea that those beliefs should therefore have authority over people who do not share them.
